In the video game Space Invaders, you were originally suppose to be shooting at soldiers. "The powers at be" decided it was politically unwise to encourage the killing of humans so the soldiers were turned into aliens.

Space Invaders was so amazingly popular in Japan that it caused a coin shortage until the country's Yen supply was quadrupled. Entire video arcades were opened in Japan specifically for this game.

They start off slow,
but they don't play clean!
As you progress through the game Space Invaders the speed dramatically changes. The more aliens you shoot, the faster the remaining aliens would move towards you.
This key feature probably added to the Space invaders addiction.
Although this was a popular part of the video game, it was orignally an unintentional result of the way the game was written.
